Grow the Gardens

Gardens

One in every four South African children are still going hungry. This prevents healthy early childhood development, with 27.4% of  children under 5 years of age reported to have stunted growth - a measure of chronic hunger and continued under - nutrition (2016 Demographic and Health Survey). Learning on an empty stomach is very difficult and a barrier to education and good nutrition is a key aspect of HIV/AIDS care.

Rising food prices makes it a challenge to provide nutrition for South Africas 13 million children living in poverty. Children under 17 years of age and particularly in rural areas remain highly vulnerable to poverty.

Starfish works with our Community Based Partners (CBOs) to provide nutritional services and keep children and their families healthy. In the last year one of our CBO partners has been able to support 231 new and existing individual household food gardens. Both household and communal gardens are encouraged and sustained through support and training:

- Provision provided includes fencing, seeds, seedlings and garden tools.

- Training involves advice on planting for the time of year and region as well as focusing on maintaining food gardens through drought seasons by minimising water usage through utilising 'grey water', and mulching to maximise moisture retention in soil.

- Staggered planting is conducted to create a more sustainable harvest.

"The garden...its the gift to our household because we can have food every year now"

Give hope to our next generation today by Gifting a garden or helping to Grow our existing food gardens.
